VALUE OF A ROPE
500 FEET DROP AVOIDED .After a narrow escape -when he fell while climbing on the Pillar Bock, Ennerdale, in the Lake District, in England, Mr. John Scully, aged 29, of Gloucester, sustained a dislocated ankle. Mr. Scully and a companion, roped together, had reached the top of the north face of the rock, when Mr. Scully lost his footing and fell 15ft. or 20ft. to a ledge. But for the rope he would probably have fallen from the ledge, a sheer drop of 400 ft. to 500 ft. Several parties were on the rock at the time, and Mr. Scully was hauled to the top by means of the rope, and later brought down. It was midnight before he reached a shepherd's hut at Gitterthwaite, at the head of Ennerto Rowrah, where Dr. Haythorwaite dale Lake. Then he was taken by car advised his iemoval to hospital.
