BAKING OF BREAD
BAN ON IMPROVERS PROTEST BY FARMERS [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday A strong protest against the prohibition of the use of improvers in bread bakeries, in response to the request of wheatgrowers, was made at the annual conference of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union to-day. A remit asking' the Government to permit the use of improvers was carried unanimously. It was stated that New Zealanders were being asked to withstand competition from overseas with their hands tied. New Zealand was the only country not allowed to use improvers. The Health Department would give no reason for its ban, and even refused io see a demonstration of improvers. It was stated that they were used in Australia and England as a matter of course.
