GAME BIRDS
CHUKOR IN CANTERBURY ENCOURAGING REPORTS Increiises in the number of chukor seen in the back country were reported at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society last week. It was stated also that the birds were spreading rapidly. Mr. G. H. Lawrence said that lie had been informed recently that a covey of 40 or more chukor had been seen at Mount Torlesse. The birds were definitely established. As to an open season that was for future councils of the society to decide. Personally, he hoped that it would not be done for a very long time. Members knew the difficulties the society had faced iu establishing the birds, and it was to be hoped that they would be given time to become thoroughly acclimatised. Mr. Lawrence said that it was only four years since the birds had been introduced in the society's district, and slightly longer in the Ashburton district. That the Ashburton society had had an open season for the birds for tho last two years indicated thejr possibilities, but he hoped, however, that future councils would not be too hasty in declaring an open season.
