LEWIS PASS ROAD

proposal; for bridge NEW SOUTH ISLAND HIGHWAY To facilitate work on the Lewis Pass highway from Canterbury to Westland, for which Cabinet recently made a grant of £25,000 for this year, the Public Works Department proposes to erect a temporary bridge over the Hope River, and open up a camp for unemployed married men. Sketch plans of the proposed bridge are at present' being prepared by the Public Works Department in Christchurch. It is anticipated that the work of constructing the bridge will bo started as soon as the plans* are approved by the authorities in Wellington.

Several weeks are likely ,to elapst before this can be done, but there are definite signs that the Government is carrying out its intention of speeding up the Lewis' Pass work in accordance with its recent promise to representatives of the Canterbury Progress Xeague and other bodies interested in the project both on the Canterbury and West Coast sides of the pass.

The temporary bridge will probably be 300 ft. in length. The type of construction has j not been definitely decided upon, but it is likely that rail piles will be driven to carry the structure and that the decking will be carried out in light timber.
