LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
MAYORALTY OF ONEHUNGA CANDIDATURE OF MR. J. PARK In response to a petition presented by a deputation on Thursday evening Mr. John Park, chairman of the committee appointed recently to investigate the affairs of the Onehunga Borough Council, and a former Mayor of Onehunga, yesterday announced his intention to contest the forthcoming Onehunga mayoral election. The other candidates so far announced are the present Mayor, Mr. E. Morton, and the deputy-mayor, Mr. S. Vella. NORTHOOTE CONTEST Mil. E. C. FOWLER TO STAND Mr. E. C. Fowler, a member of the Northcote Borough Council and chairman of the Water Committee, has consented to become a candidate for the Northcote Mayoralty. The other candidates so far announced are the present Mayor, Mr. R. and Mr. N. S. Davidson, a member of the council. TE PUKE'S FIRST MAYOR MR. H. O. COONEY UNOPPOSED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] TAURANGA. Saturday The honour of being the first Mayor of Te Puke has fallen to Mr. H. O. Cooney, who has been returned unopposed. Messrs. F. Bostock, G. Sweetman, J. Persey, J. A. Jamieson, J. P. Ryan and F. Palmer have been elected unopposed as members of the first Te Puke Borough Council. The Mayor-elect was closely identified with the affairs of the old Town Board, being a member of the board for 14 years, and chairman for 12 years. Mr. Cooney was born at Whangarata, near Pukekohe, and for some years he was a teacher at various schools in the Auckland Province, his last appointment being that of headmaster of the Te Puna School, near Tauranga. He qualified as a solicitor in 1914 and is now practising his profession in Te Puke.
