HOLIDAY IN AUCKLAND

RAIN AFTER SUNSHINE ATTRACTIONS FOR TO-DAY i RACING AND OTHER SPORTS The fine weather at the beginning of the Easter holidays did not fulfil its promise yesterday, when heavy and almost continuous rain fell from three o'clock in the morning until mid-day, causing discomfiture to campers and affecting plans for short excursions from the city. According to the Herald gauge, 1.13 in. of rain fell yesterday. On Friday the thermometer reading at four o'clock in the afternoon was 72 degrees, since when there has been a progressive drop in the temperature, the reading yesterday afternoon being 69 degrees. The Government meteorologist forecast last night that the weather in Auckland to-day, for which a variety of sporting attractions has been arranged, would be cloudy to overcast and misty, with rain at times. The principal sporting fixture to-day will be the conclusion of the Auckland Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Ellerslie, which will be attended by a largo number of holidaymakers. With good fields engaged, another interesting day's sport should be witnessed.

Tho Auckland provincial golf championships, which commenced on Saturday, will be continued, and tournaments will be conducted by various other clubs. The Auckland Bowling Centre's tournament, play in which began on Good Friday, will also bo continued to-day.

The annual cricket match at the Domain between the Auckland and Wellington Harbour Board teams, for the Barnett Shield, will be concluded today, and an Association football match will be played at Blandford Park between teams representing Thistle and H.M.S. Leith. The Auckland Lawn Tennis Association's hard-court championships will be continued on the Windmill Road courts and concluded tomorrow.

An interesting event to-day, which should attract many spectators, will be a native entertainment at Orakei. Several similar performances have been given recently, and have done a great deal toward reviving interest in Maori customs.
