CRUELTY TO ANIMALS
Sir, —Although the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has my most wholehearted support, it seems to me that the aim of the founders of the society was to prevent deliberate cruelty to animals,'and not to annoy those of us who have to handle livestock on the farm and in the saleyard. One could quote many cases of farmers and carriers being called to order for trivialities, and I am sure I have ample support when I claim that the society would be doing far better work if it directed its attacks to horse racing, hunting, fishing and sundry kindred sports, instead of hampering and annoying those who provide us with the food we eat. I do not think the society is justified in directing its activities against those who handle livestock for a living, except in certain flagrant cases. Time and money could be much better expended in discouraging sports, etc., which cause pain to animals, for there are plenty of sports whicn do not lay themselves open to any such charge.
Interested.
