BACKWARD CHILDREN

Sir, —It was indeed thrilling to read of Lord Nuffield's great thought and action for the benefit of crippled children. In my; present position to guide the mental energies of a backward tchild.of nearly 10 years, whose home is almost in the back-blocks', there is the opportunity to study this problem of "crippled'-' mentality. Physically mv charge is a splendid example of girl!hood. There is a public school about three miles distant, but it would be inadvisable for the child to attend, as she would require to be taught along different lines, compared with normal infants, and yet. as she is an only child, it would be good to enjoy the companionship of others about her own age in some school. A suburtyn or country home for the education of handicapped children such as this would be much appreciated by many parents in the North Island; a second " St. Leonards" for mentally "crippled" children of school age—those backward in some vital aspects, yet well advanced in other respects —would be another step in great consideration for the coming generation, and in order t6 make the very best of those problems of human life. Lovkr of thk North.
