RELIEF WORKERS' PAY

Sir,—The weekly wage for a married relief worker with no family residing in the Waitakere and Taupaki districts is 18s per week, irrespective of whether he is registered at Henderson or not. On this he is expected to feed and clothe himself and his wife and pay rent. No doubt readers will rub their eyes when they read this and ask, "Is this possible?" But I can assure you, kind readers, that this is no exaggeration, no stretch of the imagination, but an absolute fact. I appeal to fairminded men and women, do you honestly think it can be done? Jetsam.
