SWIMMING BATH SCHEME NO FUNDS FROM ART UNIONS Petitions regarding the use of art union funds for the construction of swimming baths near the Birkenhead Wharf were tho subject of a letter received from the Minister of Internal Affairs, Sir Alexander Young, at a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council on Wednesday. "There is little prospect of a request in this direction receiving favourable consideration," the _ Minister wrote. "Under existing conditions applications for art union benefits to provide for fresh capital expenditure or the creation of new assets cannot be looked on with favour. Tho policy has been, and still is, to allot the profits derived from the art unions only to institutions which are rendering social services of various kinds for t);» benefit of the community, but which are in financial difficulties, and more particularly those ministering to the relief of distress." _ Permission to take up the Poppy Day collection on Thursday, April 18, was granted to the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association. Notification was received that tho Birkenhead' levy toward the maintentenance of the "Auckland Museum was £BO.
