INCREASE IN CHARGES / [from our own correspondent] | HAMILTON, Thursday A new scale of fares for taxi-cabs was fixed at a meeting of tho Hamilton Borough Council last night. The new rato for ono or two passengers travelling any distance not exceeding a mile will be Is. For each additional third of a mile tho charge will be 3d, and there will bo an additional charge of 3d for each passenger over two, except children, for tho journey. Waiting time will bo Gd for every five minutes. <At the Borough Council's meeting a fortnight ago a scale of charges was adopted, but, at tho request of taxi owners and tho public, this was abandoned in favour of the charges confirmed last night. Tho rato at present charged in Hamilton is 9d a mile, irrespective. of tho number of passengers carried. Under tho scale which' the council decided to reject the charge of the first mile would havo been Is and for each additional mile or part of a mile 9d. On Sundays, Good Fridays and Christmas Day the charge was to have been increased by a half.
