DEFENCES OF FRANCE
SERVICE FOR CONSCRIPTS PROPOSED NEW BATTLESHIP PARIS, March 12 The French Cabinet has decided that pending instruction, the two-year military service conscripts recruited on April 1 will serve 18 months, and those recruited in October will serve two years. The Government has tabled a bill authorising the construction of a 35,000ton battleship after January 1, 1937, in addition to that already included in the 1935 programme. It is stated that this proposal will enable France to keep within the Washington treaty tonnage.
