SLAUGHTERING QUOTA
MESSRS. BORTHWICK'S WORKS approval of restriction [BT TEIjEGR ATO —PRESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Approval of the recommendations of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board to the Minister of Agriculture that tho Canterbury killings of Thomas Borthwick and Sons, Australasia, Limited, bo restricted, was expressed in a resolution carried at a representative gathering of farmers to-day. An explanation of the board's policy was given by Mr. T. A. Duncan, actingchairman of the board, and Mr. H. D. Acland, a producers' representative on tho board. A meeting of the committee of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association carried tho following resolution: —That this committee is of the opinion that the action of tho New Zealand Meat Producers' Board and the Government in providing for quotas covering tho slaughtering of stocky is in tho best interests of Dominion meat producers. Tho committee congratulates the board on taking the long view of the problem and is of opinion that the restriction now being exercised will result in the retention of the control of the industry in the hands of the Dominion's producers. RESTEIOTIONS OPPOSED PROTEST AT TJMARU [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] TI&IARU, Wednesday A meeting of farmers and others interested was held to-day to consider the position that has arisen as a result of the restrictions on killing operations at Messrs. Borthwiek's Belfast works. • .. . . i A resolution was passed protesting against the restrictions ancTurging their removal. The Minister of Agriculture is to bo asked to reconsider his decision. An amendment- to the effect that the matter be left in the hands of tho meat board was heavily defeated.
