STEER RIDING
Sir, —I wish to add my voice to the protests of " Fair Play " and " Old Farmer " on this subject. There is no doubt these animals are subjected to cruelty, in the form of terror, after standing in yards, where they can scarcely move, very often for hours, and, without the slightest protection .from the boiling heat, they are at last released only to find a burden on their backs, which sends them almost mad with fright, rushing frantically round, frothing at the mouth. When an agricultural association puts on this form of amusement at a show, it is only pandering to the tastes of a few youths, who wish to emulate the American cowboy utunts. No right-minded person could possibly find pleasure in witnessing the spectacle of a steer, and very often a poor old cow, being frightened to death, and that is not the only side to it. What is taking place on the farms, preparatory to the show? Another Old Farmer.
