SUBSIDISED SHIPPING

Sir, —Once again we read that the Union Steam Ship Company is putting out of commission two of its ships owing to the unequal competition of subsidised ships trading between Sydney and Auckland, thereby throwing out of employment about 300 men', to say nothing of subsidiary employment. Is it not time that the Government took the people into its confidence? For instance, what are the answers to the following queries:—Are the Australian and New Zealand Governments unable to agree on methods similar to thoso which prevent British ships trading on the American coast? (2) Do the pilot, , harbour and light dues, etc., compensate for loss of local trade and employment? (3) Is there any Imperial reason or treaty to prevent legislation on similar lines to those applied on the American coast? In conclusion, any old tub carrying t]je red duster will do for me. Transom.
