TRAFFIC PROSECUTIONS

SOME HUMOROUS ASPECTS SUGGESTION BY MAGISTRATE Occasional humorous incidents enlivened the traffic prosecutions in the Magistrate's Court before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday.

"I am lame, as you can see, but my friend, who was knocked down as he was crossing the road to board a tram, is at present lamer than I am," stated a witness for the prosecution in a case in which a van driver was charged with negligent driving. One of the many motorists vrho was prosecuted for driving a car without a tail light offered the explanation that he was driving a hired car, "You had better deduct the fino from the rent," remarked the magistrate, in fining defendant ss, with 10s costs. Three men who appeared on charges of failing to notify change of ownership of a car stated that the original owner of the car had disappeared and had later been proved to be suffering from loss of memory. As a result, it had not been possible to obtain the necessary ownership papers. The charges were dismissed. Over 30 prosecutions were brought yesterday, but they were principally of a minor nature. However, for passing stationary tramcars two motorists were fined £2 and £1 10s respectively.
