OLD GRAMMAR SCHOOL
RENT REMISSION SOUGHT REQUEST TO THE BOARD A deputation from tlie Workers' Educational Association waited on the Auckland Grammar School Board at its meeting yesterday afternoon, seeking the remission of rent on the premises occupied by the association in the old Grammar School building, Symonds Street.
Speaking on behalf of the deputation, Mr. W. H. Cocker said that in 1930 the income of the association, together with various grants, had amounted to £2500. With the withdrawal of most of the grants, the income for this year would be about £llOO. "Unless we are exempted from the rent payment we will have to curtail seriously our valuable* work," said Mr. Cocker He agreed that the rental figure was reasonable.
Mr. T. U. Wells, a member of the deputation, stated that the association was having a very hard time. "The position in regard to the building is most anomalous," said Professor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the board. "The board has decided to hand the premises over to the university authorities and we are only awaiting legislative sanction. The rent that we collect is simply handed over to the Education Department." Professor Thomas said ho thought in the circumstances the association should apply to the Minister of Education for remission of the rent. The Elam School of Art occupied the other half of the building and did not pay any rent.
On the motion of the chairman it was decided to acquaint the Education Department with the'position and suggest that the rent be foregone.
