FIRE FIGHTING
DEMONSTRATION EVENTS BRIGADES IN COMPETITION FIRST FIXTURE SINCE 1929 [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] BLENHEIM, Wednesday Tho United Fire Brigades' Association's demonstration opened this morning. Tho demonstration is the first national fixture held since 1929. The competitions opened with the Gilberd Memorial one-man dry coupling event. Hastings, represented by Fireman N. Muir, did the excellent time of 51 l-ss, Rotorua (Fireman F. Stewart) was second, and Carterton (Fireman H. Matson) third. Tho three men broke tho previous New Zealand record of 55s sot up at Hokitika, but tho conditions in tho event this year are -somewhat different.
Following is the detailed result, first £4 and gold medal; second, £3; third, £2; fourth, £1. —Hastings, 51 l-ss. G shield points, 1; Rotorua, 52 4-ss, 5 points, 2; Carterton, 535, 4 points, 3; Hawera, 57 2-ss, 3 points, 4; Petono, 58s, 2 points, 5; Qtorohanga, 595, 1 point, 6. Thirty-eight brigades competed. •' In the fireman, hose, reel and ladder (modern) event, Carterton (Fireman H. Matson, captain, Deputy-Superin-tendent C. J. Churchouse, foreman, G. Steffert, and Fireman J. Finn and D. Jackson) defeated Hawera, who won at the last demonstration in 1929. Details:—Carterton, 45 3-ss, 1; Ha\yera, 47 1 -ss, 2; Gore, 495, 3; Stratford and Dannevirke., 49 2-ss, dead-heat, 4; Greymouth, 49 4-ss, 6. Eighteen brigades competed. With two events completed the leaders in the championship shield are:— Carterton, 24 points; Hawera, 19; Gore, 12; Stratford and Dannevirke, 7 each; Hastings, 6. The two-men hose and standpipe event is unfinished. Kumara, 365, has the leading time, followed by Cobden, 3G l-ss.
In the three-men hose and standpipe with instantaneous coupling, which is about half complete, To Awamutu leads with 31 l-ss, followed by Otorohanga, 33 3-ss, and Pukekohe, 34 l-ss. Tho contests will be continued on Friday.
CONFERENCE CONCLUDES AUCKLAND PRESIDENT ELECTED [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] BLENHEIM, Wednesday The 56th annual conference of the United Firo Brigades' Association concluded to-day. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —President, Superintendent H. E. Follas (Devonport) elected unopposed; immediate past-president, DeputySuperintendent J. 11. Wilson (Milton); vico-presidents, Superintendent A. Craig (Hamilton) and Superintendent A. J, Bennett (Nelson); treasurer, Mr. C. A. Osborne (Onehunga), unopposed; secretary, Captain T. J. Watts (Newmarket), unopposed. Gold stars denoting 25 years' continuous service were presented to tho following:—Firemen G. H. Hannav (Alexandra), E. Horve (Dannevirke), G. Jesson (Eketahuna), E. O'Neill (Sumner) and C. L. Prestney (Rangiora). Invitations to the association to hold its 1936 conference at Hastings, Akaroa and Tauranga were received. A fire brigades' demonstration opens to-day. To-morrow the visitors will be taken on a cruise of the Marlborough Sounds in the ferry steamer Tamahine, which has been chartered for tho purpose.-
