CANTERBURY LANDSLIDE

WORKERS' WHARE SMASHED HEAVY RAINSTORM More than an inch and a-quarter of rain falling in an hour caused a serious landslide on the property of Mr. J. Milliken, Flock Hill, near Cass, Canterbury, last Sunday afternoon. Earth and debris struck the back wall of the men's whare and smashed it. The floor was covered to a depth of three feet, and soil was piled up five feet "high outside. The kitchen was ankle deep in water all the afternoon.

Severe lightning and heavy thunderclaps accompanied the rainstorm. rain also washed away part of the main West Coast Road, and there were two big slips in the Craigieburn cutting and six smaller ones between there and the Broken River. The storm was confined within narrow limits. One car travelling toward Christchurch drove into a slip without realising that it was there, and at one time four other cars were delayed. Further heavy rain with thunder and lightning again fell on Monday afternoon in the same district and the fall was estimated at an inch. Again it was of very short duration and confined to a small area. No damage to the roads resulted from this downpour.
