TRANSPORT CONTROL

SCOPE OF CITY LICENCE IMPORTANT COURT RULING [BY TELEGBAPH —PBESS ASSOCIATION] DTjXEDIN, Saturday A. decision of importance concerning the rights of city authorities- to engage in transport outside their own districts wus giv-en by Mr. JustiOS Ken* nedv in the iSupreme Court this; morning in the case, in which a writ of; certiorari was sought against No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority concerning its recent decision granting a seasonal licence, to the Dunedin City Council to operate a bus service to the Eglington Valley. The Judge found that ths corporation had 110 authority to operate a service taking passengers as far away as Lake County, and he set aside the decision of the Licensing Authority.. His ruling was based on section 21" of the Municipal Corporations Act, which provide# for the establishment of services, with the consent of a "neighbouring local .authority." His Honor held that the Lakii' County Council was, beyond question, not ft neighbouring local authority. APPLICANT'S FORMALITIES OVERLAPPING OF SERVICES [FBOM OUE OWN CORRESPONDENT] "WHAXGAREt Saturday What was considered to lie a great overlapping in the formalities of commencing a passenger motor lervice was brought forward by Mr. J. D. Mitchell at last evening's meeting of the Wliu%ngarei Chamber of Corr, merce. He stated that in the case of a country applicant for a licence it wat necessary for him to visit the post office for Si number-plate and insurance, the Barough Council office for a traffic licence, the Transport Board office for a certificate of fitness and a passenger licence, and the County Council office for a driver's licence. He thought all that work could be done from one office, which would be a great convenience for operators. It was decided to forward a remit, on the subject to the Associated Chambers of Commerce. Later, Mr. D. L. Ross suggested the chamber should establish a transport committee to place evidence before sittings of the No- 1 Transport Licensing Authority on behalf of the business people who, at present, had no advocate other than the applicant for a licence. The suggestion was adopted.
