OBITUARY

SIR LANGER OWEN DISTINGUISHED AS JUDGE (Received January 25. 8.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. Jan. 25 The death is announced of Sir Langer Owen who retired from the Supreme Court Bench, New South Wales, in June, 1932. He was also formerly a Judge of the Equity Court. His age was 73 years. Sir Langer was twice married, his second wife being a daughter of Sir Frederick Chapman, of New Zealand.

The late Sir Langer Owen, who was born in Sydney was educated at Charterhouse and New College, Oxford. He was called to the Bar, Lincoln's Inn, in 1888 and admitted to the New South Wales Bar in 1889, being made a K.C. in 1906. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court, New South Wales, 1922-32. He established the Red Cross Information Bureau in Sydney, and conducted it during the war. When Sir Langer retired from the Bench in 1932 he announced that his services would always be available and that he would act gratuitously in any capacity at the request of the Govern T ment. The Federal Government took advantage of this, and Sir Langer was appointed Royal commissioner for the inquiry into performing rights. He was also an arbitrator in respect to claims for compensation to British migrants in Australia.
