MORE WATER IN AVON

WEIR FOR ROYAL VISIT SWIMMING AND BOATING ! There is a possibility that the weir which has been built in the River Avon beside the Armagh Street bridge, in Christchureh, deepening the water above it for the Royal visit river carnival on Saturday night, will be left in position until Easter. Residents of the locality appear to approve the change made in the river, and the deeper water lias already been turned to bathing and swimming use by scores of delighted children. Mr. H. G. Livingstone, chairman of the Christchureh Drainage Board, told a Sun reporter this week that the Act which permitted the board to erect weirs in the Avon defined their height, which was not to be more than 6in. above levels fixed in 1925), and marked by pegs at intervals along the banks. The height of the temporary weir at the Armagh Street bridge was above this limit, and any ratepayers wishing to do so could object to the retention of the weir.
