BOXING IN PARIS

CRUISER-WEIGHT TITLE RETENTION BY HOLDER PARIS, Jan. 14 In a boxing bout of 15 rounds for the European cruiser-weight championship, Marcel Thil (holder) defeated Jock McAvoy, the English champion, on points. The Englishman pressed in the opening rounds, but Thil forced the pace >n the fourth round, severely punishing his opponent with right and left hooks. He continued scoring with body blows. McAvoy rallied in the seventh, scoring fiercely with his left. Much in-fighting followed, and Thil's ear was bleeding in the ninth, McAvoy by superior footwork evading punishment. Thil opened the 10th round by jumping from his corner and sending McAvoy to the ropes with a series of hooks to the body. He maintained this vigorous attack throughout the round, weakening the Englishman, who continued to box gamely, but was unable to stall off the Frenchman's sledgehammer body blows. McAvoy went down twice in the 14th and was saved by the gong at the count of five. Thil was triumphantly aggressive in the 15th round. A DRAW IN SYDNEY CORMIER AND BLANDON SYDXEY, Jan. 15 Vernon Cormier Bst. 131b. (America), in his first boxing bout in Australia, drew with Merv Blandon Bst. 131b. It was not a brilliant exhibition, but was very hard throughout.
