NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM

STREETS AT WHANGAREI SCHEME TO BE EXTENDED [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI. Tuesday A decision to carry out the second section of its street lighting scheme early in the new financial year was made by the Whangarei Borough Council at a meeting last evening. The firstsection was put into commission on December 17. This consisted of 15 street lights installed in the main business area of the town,' at a cost of £441. In moving that the council purchase a further 15 or more lamps to complete the second section of the scheme the Mayor, Mr. W. Jones, said the section of the street already lighted by the new system was wonderfully effective. He strongly favoured having the second section completed before the winter. Decision as to the area to be embodied in this section could be made at a later meeting. In the meantime the lamps could be obtained from England. Members spoke unanimously in support of the new system and expressed the desire to have as much of the borough included in the second section as the financial position would permit. The Mayor's motion was carried.
