VESSEL ON ROCKS

JOSEPH CONRAD'S MISHAP GALE OFF BROOKLYN NEW YORK. Jan. 2 A 60-mile-an-hour north-west gale blew Captain Alan Villiers' square rigged sailing ship Joseph Conrad, which had to be towed into New York Harbour owing to lack of wind on December 31, after her arrival from Nassau, on* to the rocks 800 ft. from the Brooklyn shore early to-day.

Two passengers and two members of the crew were rescued by the police, two other members of the crew being left on board. They refused to leave the ship in the absence of Captain Villiers, who was ashore.

The vessel sprang a leak when she was dashed on to the rocks, but she is in no danger in the shallow water.
