The latter gained an outright win at the expense of Otago and is in second place. Canterbury has 16 points, Wellington 8, Auckland 4 and Otago 2. The system of scoring is as follows:—. Outright win, 8; outright loss, 0; win. on first innings, 4; loss on first innings, 2; tie on first innings, 3 each; tie on match, 4 each; no result after six hours' play, 3 each. In the event of a tie between two or more teams the shield is awarded on averages. Auckland has yet to play Wellington, the match being set down at Eden Park from January 18 to 22. Canterbury will play Otago at Dunedin from February 22 to 26. Prospects at present favour Canterbury and the only province which has. a chance of equalling it on points is Wellington, which will have to beat Auckland outright, wflile Canterbury will have to lose to Otago outright. Should this happen the shield will be decided between Canterbury and Well-, ington on averages. To date Canterbury, has easily the best average.
