CHATHAM ISLANDS
VERY DRY SEASON SHORTAGE OF WATER A Lyttelton resident who is visiting the Chatham Isjands states in a letter that the season at the islands has been a very dry one. When he wrote there had been no rain for several weeks and household storage tanks were nearly empty. Baths were a luxury, and the writer said he had to shift with a basin of water. Ho had had a few swims in a safe hole in the rocks. Otherwise sea bathing was impossible because of stingrays, octopuses and sharks. None of the islanders will ever venture into the sea. Ho even found an octopus in the swimming hole on one occasion.
Most of the shearing was finished on December 10, and the wool was being carted in by bullock drays and by horse teams. There was plenty of work at the islands, the fisheries at Owenga and Kaingaroa. and the trawler South Sea being kept busy. The islanders were looking forward to the annua! rare meeting—the jubilee meeting of the Chatham Islands Jockey Club—which is to be held on December 27.
