HEAVY RAIL TRAFFIC
MANY HOLIDAY TRAVELLERS SPECIAL EXPRESSES TO-DAY With the holiday rush set in in earnest, particularly heavy passenger traffic was carried on the railways at the week-end. There was a keen demand for accommodation and many additional trains were rim. Some delays were caused, as the extra traffic interfered with crossings of trains at stations.
The daylight limited express which left on Saturday morning and expresses which loft in the afternoon and evening carred large complements of passengers. Many travellers also arrived at Auckland by rail on Saturday. Railway officials again experienced a very busy time yesterday. Last night's limited express carried nearly 400 passengers, accommodation being fully taxed. A special express for Wellington, at 7.40 was not filled to capacity. It " included 11 passenger vehicles. A further train for Wellington left shortly before 8..'J0, while a separate train was run to New Plymouth, leaving at 7.18 p.m. and having six carriages. About L'3oo travellers arrived from the South on the three expresses from Wellington yesterday. The first two, which arrived at 7.49 a.m. and 10.10 a.m. respectively, each had 11 full carriages, and the third one, which reached Auckland at 12.15 p.m., included 14 carriages with hardly a vacant scat. The express from New Plymouth had six carriages and arrived at 7.9 a.m.
To-day and again to-morrow many more holiday makers will travel on the railways. Trains will leave for Wellington to-day at 6.55 a.m., 8 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7.40 p.m. There will also ho additional trains for New Plymouth, Rotorua, Tauranga and Whangarci and Opua. A convincing indication of the largo volume of traffic was provided at the "checked" luggage office, where tlio staff was kept exceedingly busy.
