SUSPICIOUS FIRES
SUPERINTENDENTS POWERS DECISION IN CHRISTCHURCH [bt telegraph—rßESS association] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday In a report to the Christchurch Fire Board last evening, Superintendent Warner stated that it was his intention under section 65 of the Fire Brigades Act, in all cases where fires of a suspicious nature occurred, to take and retain possession of any property damaged, and where a fire occurred in any premises to take and retain possession of such premises pending the holding of a coroner's inquest. After reference to the section of the Act mentioned, the board expressed the opinion that the power to take possession of the property should not rest entirely with the superintendent and his officers. The proposal, however, was approved, with a proviso that the superintendent's decision in each case should be subject to the approval of the chairman of the board.
