TASMAN CROSSING

FORECAST OF WINDS ACCURACY DEFENDED SYDNEY, Nor. 26 • The State meteorologist, Mr.' D. J* Mares, has protested against the comment made by Mr. R. Nicholl, who flew the Tasman with Mr. R. G. Whitehead, in reference to the winds encountered ' during the crossing. Mr. Mares states that Mr. Nicholl's remark that " the wind was in exactly the opposite direction from which we had been warned -by the Weather Bureau to expect'it," was unwarranted. The fliers were informed that moderate westerly v to south-westerly winds were to be expected, and the fact that the areoplane drifted to the northward proved that the winds must have been blowing approximately in thai direction forecast.
