GIRL GUIDES' GATHERING
THE RING OF SERVICE Over 500 Guides, Guiders and Rangers, representing companies in the Auckland division, including Waimauku, Papatoetoe and Milford, were present at a very happy gathering held by the Auckland)' Girl Guides' Association in Carlaw Park last evening. The gathering formed the inaugural meeting of the "Ring of Service," which was formed in London two years ago. when 27,000 Guides were present. The object of the King of Service is tc provide gifts for distribution to the various social organisations of the city, each child contributing gifts of toys, food, books or handicraft. The scene last evening was a very picturesque one, with the camp fire burning brightly, surrounded by four gates marked with banners bearing the designation of the gifts, each guide passing through according to the nature of her contribution. The gatekeepers were:—Provisions, Miss Mathews; books, Miss Ruth Roberton and Miss Johnson; handicraft, Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Teape; Miss Cooper and Miss Haywarcl. The great joy that the gifts would bring to the children less fortunate than themselves was explained by the Rev. Thomas Halliday, secretary of the Social Service Workers. The remainder of the evening was spent with camp-fife songß. and an entertainment arranged by a group of rangers, Miss Mona Burjin leading the singing. Mrs. R. J. Coates, provincial commissioner, and Mrs. Halliday were guests of the association.
