NOTES ON THE RACING

ILLUMINATE WINS AGAIN SUCCESS OF DANCING LADY STAR ARTIST TAKES SPRINT BY ARCHER The each-way favourite Illuminate confirmed his good form of the first day by leading practically throughout in the Kawau Hurdles and winning very easily. Illuminate , assumed the •lead from Morrath and King Win at the first fenoe and was not afterwards headed, scoring with something in hand by four lengths from King Win, who beat Kilmuir by only a neck. Benighted was the only other to finish and was about 15 lengths behind. Morrath and King Win each made attempts iio go with Illuminate in the laet mile, but neither had any chance with him. Morrath nearly fell at the fence near the five furlongs post, and she hit the nest very hard, losing her rider, whi> made a fine attempt to recover. King Win was within u. length of Illuminate going to the second to last fence, but the latter jumped right aivay and was always clear afterwardi). Kilmuir made an effort at the finish and just failed to reach the tiling King Win. Havering jumped the first fence very badly and unseated his rider. Tho three-year old filly Dancing Lady was responsible for a mild surprise in winning the Vauxhall Hack Handicap from the each-way favourite Lifeguard, and returned double figures on tho win machine, Ballymo;iey was first to begin from Dancing Lacly, Bellkyrian, Lifeguard and Poi Dane}. With just over a furlong covered Bellkyriin was' in front and she made play through the cutting, closely followed by Dancing Lady, Poi Dance, Lifeguard and Mata Hari, with Royal Dance, Sir Willonyx and Ballymoney next. Rounding the turn Bellkyrian carried Lifeguard and Mata Hari a trifle wide, and Dancing Lady went up oa ithe rails, while Royal Dance, Poi Dance and Ballymoney were next. Dancing Lady wets in front at the distance and ■yvent on to win by three lengths from Lifeguard. Ballymoney was two lengths away third and Bellkyrian was right up fourth. Then in a bunch followed Reviver, Mata Hari, Mountain Breeze. "Exprtms, Sir Willonyx and Tutor. Du Barry Improves The winner has always shown pace in her races, and on this occasion she ran on splendidly after going up on the inside of the leaders at the turn. Lifeguard drew No. 12 at the barrier and, although he began well, was forced to cover a fair amount of grourd, especially when Bellkyrian carried him out at the turn. Ballymoney was unlucky, as. after being cut off early, he was stopped badly when making a good run in the straight. Bellkyrian was again unlucky in the draw, getting No. 17. but she displayed ifier usual brilliancy to reach the front early. However, the effort "told, and 6he weakened at the finish. She was galloped on and came in very lame. Showing improvement upon her running on the first day, Du Barry was responsible for a mild surprise in winning the Rakino Handicap, for which Velocipede was a pronounced favourite on both machines. Armacourt and Du Barry were smartest to begin, while Velocipede hung at the barrier and lost a good deal of ground. Du Barry was just clear of Armacourt and Gay Acre after going a furlong, with Eudiprace and Persian Lady following and Velocipede last. Du Barry turned into the straight several lengths clear of Gay Acre and Armacourt, with Persian Lady, Fei Mah and Velocipede following. Nothing had a chance with Dn Barry at the finish, and she won by five lengths from Velocipede, who finished strongly to beat Armacourt by a length s.nd a-half. Persian Lady- was fourth, followed by Gay Acre, Fei Mah and Eudorace. Du Barry was sharpened tip by -her race on the first day and never looked like being beaten once she reached the front. She ie a neat filly with a good action, and is raced in partnership by Messrs. R. T. Reid and E. H. Davis, who purchased her at the Trentham sales last January for 625 guineas. The St. Andrew's Handicap Kiltowyn was an each-way favourite for the St. Andrew's Handicap and duly won, although, he had to be ridden right out to just wrest the honours from Carfex. Jalldy Karo w£lS first to show out from Master Is orval, Killadar and Kiltowyn. With a furlong covered Killadar was in front, and, he led along the back from Carfex, Kiltowyn, Psychologist, Caliente, Karangapai, Jalldy Karo and King's Knave. , Killadar and Psychologist were together in front at the half-mild, with Carfex and Karangapai together :aext. ' Killadar was first into the straight from Psychologist, Carfex, Karangiipai, Caliente, Kiltowyn and Master Normal, with King's Knave on the outside. Or.ice into the straight Carfex, Caliente and Kiltowyn challenged, and' in a fine finish Kiltowyn beat Carfex in the last couple of strides by half a head. Killadar was three-parts of a length away third and was close up fourth. Next to finish were Prolyxo, Karangapai, Master Norval, Alloy and.. King's Knave. It was a soundly-run race ana the time, 1 37, wd,B only two-fifths of a eecond outside the New Zealand record. Kiltowyn was always well placed and finished m the gamcst possible fashion to win from Carfex, who looked like winning about 10yds from the post. _ The each-way favourite Ruby Meteor finished splendidly to score a decisive win in the Ngataringa Steeplechase. Absent was quickly in the lead and made the pace up the hill the first time from Luminary. Town Beauty and Capella Abbey. Absent held a slight advantage at the double from Lumin-. ary. Cs.pella Abbey and Domo. with Ruby Meteor. Neil. Town Beauty and Copey following in close order. Copey made a forward move along the back and going up the hill the second time he was just behind Absent, Luminary, Capella Abbey and Ruby Meteor also be:;ng handy. Absent led down the hill and was juat in front at the stonewall at the foot of the straight from Copey and Ruby Meteor. Nearing the last fence Ruby Meteor was' in front and, although she did not jump well, she drew away to win by two lengths from Copey, who defeated Absent by a similar margin; Luminary Was several lengths away fourth followed by Capella Abbey, Domo, Neil, Town Beauty and Wee Pat. ! Kelly Beats King Musk Ruby Meteor was very patiently handled and when asked for a final run she showed too much dash for Copey and Absent, who again ran solid races. . A fine finish in the Pupuke Plate saw the three-year-old Kelly win from the favourite King Musk, who is racing most unluckily. Sir Nigel, Kelly,, Flammarion and Lagoon were quickly prominent, Flammarion leading at the end of a furlong from Kelly, Sir Niifel, King Musk, Scotland, King Rey and Midian. Flammarion and Sir Nigel were the leaders at the half-mile from Midian, Scotland, King Musk, Kelly and Respectful Kelly ran up on the outside of Flammarion and Sir Nigel at the home turn, where Scotland and King Musk were handy ahead of Respectful. Kelly was in charge below the distance and stayed on solidly to win by a length from King Musk, who ran on in good B%lc under pressure. Respectful was half a length away third and King Rey was right up fourth. Then followed Sir Nigel, Lagoon, Scotland and Flammarion. Kelly is improving with every race and this wis his best performance to date. He made a sharp run entering tho straight, where he displayed a tendency to bore out, and w>ent on splendidly at the end. King Musk was again a shade unlucky, making a fine effort under pressure at the finish. Respectful made an improved showing after being near the rear in the early stages. Sir Nigel also did better, failing only in the last furlong. Midian was well beaten. The each-way favourite Star Artist won narrowly in a fine finish in th© Cautley Handicap. British Columbia, Matorni and King Ford were smart to begin from inside positions and when the field had settled down British Columbia and. King Ford were in front from Matorni, Princess Star, Rereatu and Rerepai, with Star Artist last. King l?ord was first into the straight from British Columbia, Matorni and Princess Star, vrith Star Artist last. The field spread across the course at the distance and Star Artist finished well to win by a neck from Rereatu. who defeated Princess Star by half a head. King Ford was a close fourth succeeded by British Columbia, Matorni and Rerepai. ' Victory for Lia Fail Star Artist was last away from the extreme outsido and was in the rear until reaching the straight, where she made a fine run. Eereatu, who finished wide, also came homo well after being second to last at the Harvest Moon was the favourite on both machines for the Stanley Hack Handicap, but the best he could do was, to finish fourth. The second fancy Lia Fail reached the front quickly and was never headed, winning decisively by a length and a-half from Coronis, Scotch Nation, finishing on, was two lengths away third and Harvest Moon was fourth. Next to finish were Nun Nicer, On Parade, Princess Bede and Royal Appellant. „ .■, , Lia Fail was riddon 6lb. overweight by h. J. Ellis, who won the previous race on Star Artist. Lia Fail has been racing consistently and is an improved mare. Coronis and Harvest Moon wepe always well placed but the winner was too good for them at the finish. Scotch Nation was running on and so was Nun Nicer, who lost a good position in the middle stages.
