NEW LYNN INTERESTS
CHURCHES AND WATER RATES TELEPHONE IMPROVEMENTS The question whether churches should be compelled to pay minimum water rates on the same basis as ordinary small and non-consumers was discussed by the New Lynn Borough Council at its meeting last night. The Mayor, Mr. G. Laweon, presided. . Several members contended that the churches used very little water and should have to pay only for what they used. It was pointed out, however, that this would establish a precedent for sports associations and similar bodies. The town clerk stated that in most boroughs churches had to pay the usual minimum rate. By a majority vote the council decided that the local churches would have to conform with the bylaws and pay the minimum rate. The establishment of an automatic telephone exchange at Avondale, and a consequent reduction in telephone charges in the surrounding districts, waa the subjeot of a letter received from the Post ahd Telegraph Department, suggesting a local conference on the matter. "New Lynn is now paying far too much for telephone facilities," remarked the Mayor, who pointed out that the establishment of such an ex-, change should result in a substantial reduction in charges. It was decided to approach the other local bodies oon"cernea in l the matter. The formation of roads on Bollard's Estate was decided upon by the council, This would provide greatly improved access and facilities for prospective purchasers. Arrangements for the sale of tbe land by tender were left to a committee.
