TRIAL FOURS COMPETITION ACTIVITIES AT FOUR CLUBS Eminently suitable water conditions and radiant sunshine prevailed on Saturday when clubs' trial four racing was resumed. Three clubs, St. George's, .Waitemata and Auckland, used the waterfront road course, while at North Shore oarsmen competed in trial fours also. The West End Club was not active. WAITEMATA BOATING CLUB EASY VICTORY FOR MASON Racing among the Waitemata Boating Club members on Saturday was for trophies presouted by a vice-president. Mr. Hugh Wright. Five crews entered and in the two heats and final, interesting racing was in evidence. Mr. T. Marshall was starter and Mr. C. C. Cairns judge. The first heal crews were:—R. Stables, A. Harper, K. Simpson. F. R. Wright; L. E. Brooker, W. J. Lowe, J. O'Hanlon, P. D. Conway; R. G. Barker, J. P. Hooper, F. A. Weaver, A. Smith. Even racing to the Parnell Baths resulted. Barker went wide here, however, and Stables withstood all challenges to win by a length and a-half. Brooker was a similar distance furthor astern. The crews in the second heat comprised:— O. J. C. Mason, E. H. Bishop, C. H. Cairns, F. J. Dalton; L. N. Ross, J. W. | Reimon, J. C. Swift, P. Usher. It was an even race to the bend, where Mason steadily went to the front to win by a length. The crows of Mason and Stables contested the final. Mason took the lead early and was four lengths ahead at the judge. ST. GEORGE'S CLUB D'AUTHREAU'S SECOND WIN. The second set of trial fours rowed by the St. George's Rowing Club, were conducted on Saturday afternoon, when four crews contested races for the Thomas trophies. Splendid racing characterised the two heats and final, the ultimate winner being C. D'Authreau's crew. Incidentally, D'Autlireau was also successful in stroking the winning crew in the club's only other trials this season. The crews in the initial heat were:—A. J. Slyfield, E. Donovan, R. Bowie, T. Tong; H. Tong, T. Kirk, D. Malthus, B. Atkins. Shortly after the start, Slyfield went to the front and maintained his' position to the finish, when he was one and a-half lengths ahead. The second heat crews were:—J. R. H. Biss, J. Colebrook, M. McLaughlin, R. Beckham; C. D'Authreau, G. M. Brown. P. Donovan, P. Moore, D'Authreau took the lead at the reef and won by a length. The crews stroked by Slyfield and D'Authreau met in the final. D'Authreau's crew soon took the l«ad and, rowing well, won_ easily by several lengths. AUCKLAND CLUB FIRST TRIALS OF SEASON The Henderson Cup and Medals, donated by Mr. Rolf Porter, were the trophies competed for by Auckland RoVing Club members in their first trial fours of the season on Saturday. Four crews participated and interesting racing was the order of the day. The crews in the'first heat were:—W. Bavistock, C. Chamberlain, J. Otway, C. O. Hughes; A. G. Fisher, S. S. Anderson, P. G.'Boon, H. T. Jellie. Bavistock took the lead early and, maintaining it throughout, won by two lengths. The crews in the second heat were:—L. K. Hughes. R. Porter, C. S. Maceau, H. Jellie; R. P. Wilson. F. R. Halls. C. H. Lambert, P. Boon. It. was an even race to the Parnell Baths, where Hughes forged ahead and won by two lengths. The crews of W. Bavistock und L. K. Hughes met in the final. After leading almost throughout, Bavistock was overhauled by Hughes near the judge, and beaten by a length. NORTH SHORE CLUB RACES FOR CHALLENGE SHIELD North Shore oarsmen followed a course from the Recorder's anchorage to the boathouse in their trial fours for the Challenge Shield and pictures on Saturday afternoon. The first heat crews were:—S. McDougal, R. Follns. W. A. Walsh, J. Hitchen. P. Turner (cox); V. Mallett, Willetts, S. Rippon, H. Mallett and W. Reid (c6x). Mallett's crow had the better of the start, and won by one length. In the final Korn, S. Cliallinor. C. Knott, C. Levy and P. Turner (cox) met the winners of the previous heat. Korn's crew won by two lengths.
