YACHTING MISHAPS
CAPSIZES IN THE HARBOUR STRONG WIND AND ROUGH SEA The strong easterly wind ami rough sea experienced in Auckland on Saturday afternoon resulted in a number of yachting mishaps. In the Akarana Yacht Club's race to Matiatia for centreboard boats the 22ft. L class yacht Rakoa, owned by Mr. W. J. Winn, split .her mainsail from luff to leach shortly after the start, and had to retire. A minute later the 18ft. V class yacht Surprise, owned by Mr. J. S. Dickson, carried away her mast. • The anchor was dropped and after the wreckage had been brought on board, the yacht was towed into Mechanic's Bay by the launch Olive Jean.
Earlier in the day, Master L. Hill capsized in his midget class boat Pirate and Master N. Patrick had a similar fate in his midget Speedwell. The crews of both beats were picked up.'
Owing to the unfavourable weather the Wakatere Boating Club, the Herne Bay Junior Sailing Club and the Akarana Junior Yacht Club were unable to hold races for their smaller classes.
