DEATH IN BUSH
DEER-STALKER SHOT ACCIDENT WITH RIFLE BROTHER'S NARROW ESCAPE [by telegraph—own correspondent! WELLINGTON, Sunday Having been shot through the chest in an accident while on a deer-stalking expedition on the Tauherenikau Ranges yesterday, Mr. Charles James Galliers, aged 24, of Wellington, died while being carried along a rough bush track by a stretcher party. He was a married man, living at 123 Austin Street, and he leaves a wife and a seven-months-old child. ( With his two brothers, Messrs. Frank Galliers and Henry William Galliers. and Mr. Malcolm Davidson, also of Wellington, Mr. Charles Galliers entered the bush yesterday. The accident occurred about six miles in from the Public Works Department camp near Kaitoke, when the party was descending a bank. A rifle was discharged when it was dropped by one of the party. The bullet struck Mr. Galliers in the chest and narrowly missed one of his brothers standing behind him. A party of members of the Tararua Tramping Club was in the vicinity, and gave what assistance they could. A party headed by Constable C. F. Stew-, art, of Upper Hutt, and including Dr. H. H. Gilmer and Mrs. Gilmer, who is a trained nurse, went out from thg Public Works camp at about 3 p.m. They were met, after three hours cn the way, by several trampers carrying Mr. Galliers out of the bush. He was then in a very low condition, and died 10 minute's later.
