NOTES ON THE RACING

KIN (5 REY'S DECISIVE WIN SUCCESS OF PSYCHOLOGIST BELILKYRIAN SCORES EASILY BY ARCHER The each-way favourite Whirling reached the front at the end of the first furlong in the Trial Stakes, but King Iley had hia measure at the distance and he had to be content with second place. Memnon and Worthy King showed out early from Whirling, who ran through on the rails before reaching the top to lead into the straight from Worthy King, King Rey, Lebanon, Huskie and Curlew. Once into the straight King Rey challenged and went on to win by a length and a-half from Whirling, who defeated Huskie by a neck. Curley was fourth, followed by En Tour, Astarth. and Ford Acre. Fast Acre was badly left and finished a long way behind. King Rey was always well placed and his more seasoned condition enabled him comfortably to account for Whirling, who has yet a good way to go before reaching his best. King Rey had something in hand and is very well. Whirling displayed fine speed and he is a big three-year-old who will do much better. Huskie ffiaished gamely. The _ southerner Morrath was the win favourile for the Waimai Hurdles but the Uest iihe could do Was to finish a modero.to third. King Win, Cordon and Glenade were the early leaders, with Morrath heading the others who early became strung out. Glenade turned along the backa length clear of Cordon, with King Win, Morrath and Silver Division following in file. Glenade jumped away at the fences along_ the back and opened, up a break to. lead into the straight by six lengths from King Win, with another five lengths to Morrath, and then Cordon and Silver Division. Glenade was tiring at the last fence, which he did not jump too well, and King Win outstayed him to win by a neck. Morrath was four lengths away third and St. Ames was a poor fourth. Then followed Silver Division, Luminary, Don't Lap and Cordon. • • ' Argument Finishes Well The first and second horsey were the, only ones vrho appeared to have chances over the lafit half-mile and King Win stayed a shade the better to have Glenade beaten a short distance from the post. If Glenade had jumped the last fence better he may have taken a little more heading. Morrath had every chance but could make no. impression a,t the end. It was with a good finishing effort that the favourite Argument prevailed in the Hautapa Hack Handicap from the moder-ately-fancied Mazir. who paid double figures for a pilace. Silver Brier and Diagano began well f:rom outside positions. Silver Brier being :in command at the end of a furlong from Intaglio, Sunny Downs, Last Lap, Day Wind and Engi, who was running up fast. Engi d ashed into the lead at the top to be four lengths clear at the turn from Sunny Downs,, Mazir, . Silver Brier, Diagano and Polly Douglas. Below the distance Engi began to weaken and Mazir was in command with about half a furlong to go. Then Argument ilashed up on the outside to win by a head from Mazir. Diagano was a neck away third and Sunny Downs was a close fourth, followed by Tuaheahe, Silver Brier, Engi, Polly Douglas and Day. Wind. , It was a fine finish, the first four all having good winning chances in the last furlong. Argument finished splendidly and thoroughly deserved his victory. Mazir did particularly well for .a novice and his turn should come very soon. Diagano and Sunny Downs wentgood ' races and' Tuaheahe, finishing on, was closer at the finish thto at any other fitage. Munisatoon,' outsider of the field on tna win machine, was responsible for a great surprise in narrowly winning the. Waikato Cup in a great finish with Solarium,' the favourite, and Prince Colossus, who dead-heated for second. Miidian, Musauil and. Mungatoon were quickly prominent, Musquil being in front when the field had settled down from Mungatoon, _Midian, Prince. Colossus, Aga Khan, Caliente, Hastier Norval and Solarium, with Royal Artist and Protommt in the rea.r. Nearing the top Caliente went up fast to join Hfusauil in the. lead and they were first into the; straight., from .Mnngatoon and Prince Colobsus. with Aga Khan and Solarium ' (oUtslde) 'next. Prince Colossus gained th<l lead .after the turn but in a great tactK&omi by a head from Solarium and ?rinc6 Colossus, who dead-heated forrsecond. Aga Khan •was riitht up fourth, followed by Miisquil, Master Norvstf',- Midi&tf and- Protommt. An Overdue Victory

The favourite Solatium appeared tobe- a shade unlucky but it was a great race home, in which, Mtrngatoon and., Prince Colossus hung on very 1 tenaciously. Aga Khan was handily placed throughout and hiß fourth was vtiry creditable. Master Norval ana Royal Artist ran much below form, _ never being dangerous. Musguil was right m the picture until inside the distance. Midian weakened at the end and Caliente stopped badly after making a fast run across the scored an overdue victory in the Claudel&nds High-weight, Handicap, paying double figures on the win machine. Sweet Lap unseated her rider at the post before the field; was let go to a . good start, from which Valpeen and Valpai were first to show out. At the end of a furlong Sweet Lap a:ad Scotch Nation were the leaders from Killatf&r. Psychologist, Valpai and Trishns,. Psychologist ran to the front near the hs,lf-mile, where the field was well strung out. Pnychologist and Scotch 3S ation showed the wsty into the straight to Valpai, Killadar, Bugle Call and Sweet Lap. Once they straightened up Valpai made a dash on the rails and held a slight advantage inside the distance, only to be worn down at the finish by Psychologist, who won by a nose,, Scotch Nation was a neck away third and Killadar was right up fourth. Next to finish were Bugle Call, Alloy, Desert Star and Trishna. . . It was Psychologist s first win since he scored in the Hauraki Plate at Takapuna last January. Valpai and Scotch Ration ran sound :races a;ad the latter looked as u be would he, improved by the run. Killadar had every chance but failed,,but was staying on solidly at the finish. Alloy did not reproduce his "Whangarei form but he also was running on after being in the rear most of the w&y. y \ Triune Badly Left

The win favourite Triune was unlucky to be beaten in the Tamahere Stakes, in which he finished third. Triune was troublesome at the post and was turned round at the start, losing i» good maw lengths before •iiiraping off from the outside, while Mateking and Cyllaros were also slow away Golden Princeißs was . first aw Comeds' and Parquet and she led into . the straight; from Parauet. Light Comedy and Mafekins. Gollden Princess vvas always a winner in the run home and length from Parauet, 'riho defeated inuno by a similar margin. Light Comedy . -was fourth, followed by CHlaros, lhe Vamp an Goidon' Princess was purchased at the vearlintr saleß at Trentham for 40 guineas. She has improved considerably since rit Paeroa but tliere was no special merit in her performance, as most of those behind her were backward. Parquet showed promise although she displayed a tendency to C out in the straight. Triune did remarkably Willi to bB so close after getting badly away, lie ran about a o ." n h d e cr e^ eßßur ° but ran on gamely right at the end. Half-head margins, separate-d the placo setters in a fine finish .in the Cambridge Handicap, Scotland lasting win from the each-way favourite Star Artist. Scotland and Star Artist were quickly in the lead and they made play into the straight froin King a Knave and Star Arfiflt who were together King Ford, Jth King Mcstor and L'Allegro in the reari Over the last furlong, a { great tusele ensued, the judge declaring in favour of Scotlnnd over Star Artist (outside), with King's IKnavo (middle) almost in line. King Mestor was fourth, followed by Princess Star. King Ford and L Allegro,' star Artist Just Tails Scotland ran on in the gamest PO 88 ' 1 ? 1 ® fashion at the end. He isi thprqugly fit. StaT A r tist made a fine final effort, just failing to Mt up L J. Ellis appeared to be a trifle confident on her in the straight., Kings Knave who hud a slb. apprentices allowance nearly brought off a big surprise. The walk-in start evidently suited him and. a.ter beginning first be was well placed throughout. L'Allegro seemed a trifle sore but Kin" Ford, who showed some dash early, iiK, missed » place in the Tatipiri Hack Hand in which jßellkyrian registered an e. dwin Bellkyrian was first out fom Row Coronis. Mungacre and .Prince Acre Bellkyrian made play across the, top and led into the straight from Coronis. Chief ana Prince Acre and Adalene. Hpfeftted Gay Hose by a length. Coronis was a good fourth, succeeded by R® c ° rd Pr?«ofi Acre Chief Lap and Adalene. P Usually unh«cky in the draw for post position.,. J|« k a»/ eW out fir?t. never funked Like beaten.
