PHEASANTS' EGGS

LAW REGARDING BREEDING A point concerning the legality of hatching pheasants' eggs is raised in a letter to the Hekalo from a Huapai resident. The correspondent states that, in clearing some scrub, he disturbed a pheasant from her which were abandoned. He would have likod to have put them under a hen with the object of finally liberating the chicks, and possibly breeding from them, but 110 wished to know what his position was in this respect.' Commenting on the letter, Mr." C. M. Gordon, secretary to the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, said it would be wrong for any person in the Huapai resident's position to hatch the eggs for breeding purposes. Had the resident notified the society of his discovery no doubt permission would have been given him to breed the chicks for liberation. The nest had evidently been deserted, but it would have been riecessarj to have put the eggs under a hen while they were still warm.
