COMMENTS ON FORM GREAT RACE FOR CUP AUCKLAND TROTTER UNLUCKY [nv TELECUIAPH—OWN CORKESPONDEN'T] CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Sea Gift, a strong favourite for the Spring Handicap, won well and the contest was an interesting cne. Teviot Downs was in front at- the end of a mile, whon a rein broke and he galloped for tho i-est of the journey. Luckily he did not interfere with any of the other horses. Sea Gift made two breaks • early, but afterwards trotted solidly. Now Metford, a greatly improved trotter, also went well. Backers were again well on the mark in tho Empire Handicap, for after Nelson Du Oro had made most of tho running from Linella and Purser, Cloudy Range, tho favourite, came fast and just beat I'etot Locanda, who put in a great finish. The latter was unlucky to bo beaten and should be heard of later at the meeting. Eureka Boy also showed most promising form. The New Zoaland Cup will go down in history as one of tho greatest races for the coveted prize. Silver De Oro stumbled at the start und did not recover until all hope of success was gone. Sunny Morn made tho running for a mile and a-half, with Mountain Dell. Indianapolis, Sir Guy and Impromptu in close order. When Sunny Morn faltered Mountain Dell went on in front of the favourite, Indianapolis, and Blue Mountain made a forward move.

Harold Logan, who had been gradually making up ground, raced up on tbo outsido of tho field, but three furlongs from homo Indianapolis shot out and opened up a break of three lengths from Blue Mountain, who was a similar distanco in front of Harold Logan, Blue Mountain appeared a winner at the distance, but Indianapolis under u hard drive wen handsomely by a length from Blue Mountain, who was three lengths in front of Harold Logan. Eoi L'Or and Impromptu followed closely. The winner registered a very fine performance and established a. fresh winning race record of 4.15 4-5, while Harold Logan went 4.1'2 '2-5. a world's race record. Indianapolis proved himself a line racehorse, »1-

though he ha-d all the best of the running. He was nicely tucked in behind the leaders all the way and was enabled to rise his great burst of Bpced from the three furlongs post. He has been under veterinary treatment for the past 10 days and was sore when he went out on the track. Worthy Light was made a Rood favourite for the Yaldhurst Handicap, but he failed to finish in the money. He made a good beginning, but quickly drifted back, after which he made a dash closer to the leaders. Jn doing so lie was compelled to cover some extra ground and he was not persevered with over the last quarter of a mile. Arethusa and Trampfast made practically all the. running, but both faded in the straight, where Harvest Child and Gold Tinge came through. Harvest Child won nicely from Gold Tinge, who covered a lot of extra ground, and Ayrmont Chimes, who finished very fast. Wrecker was in thepicture for :i mile and a-qnarter, when he faded out. Worthy Light should do better before the meeting is finished. The Auckland trainer F. J. Smith was very unlucky not to win the Middlcton Handicap with Nell Volo, who was a good favourite. Lough Guy and Fifa made most of the running with Explosion handy. Nell Volo. after a slow beginning, picked np ground rapidly, showing great speed after passing the half-mile post. She had caught the leaders at the home turn, where she broke and lost a lot of ground. Settling into her stride she again showed extreme speed and got up to gain third place. Explosion gave his best showing since coming from Auckland and on this display is a capable trotter. Nell Volo, however, is one of the best raced here. A typical American trotter, she did not begin well, but in this respect is not as bad as reports had suggested. She should do better at the meeting. Willow Wave, aft< r several disappointments. elected to do his best in the Riccarton Handicap, but he struggled homo only a head in front of Real Burton after a great finish. Real Burfon made nearly all the running and but for a damaged sulky would probably have won. The winner, who was favourite, showed great speed in the middle stages, but seemed ready to cry enough. Tin' unlucky horse of the race was Fernbrook Lass, who was last with six.fur longs to go. She finished very well in a fa<?trun race. Rey Spec also went well. War Buoy, who was heavily backed, scored his ninth win in as many starts in the Victoria. Handicap and won on his merits. Suro and Encounter made most, of the running. but onco the straight was reached War Buoy placed the issue beynnd doubt. He fairly outclassed a good field without being extended. Wild Guy ran into second place a-quarter of a mile from home, and Encounter, apparently then beaten, came again at the finish. The Hagley Handicap provided another stirring finish. Pegaway and Sunny Morn made the early running, but three furlongs from home Sir Guy. Glenrossie and I e«away were in front and Blue Mountain was hemmed in on the rails. The last-named got through in the straight and m a ing finish he was only a head behind Sir Guy at tho post, Sir uy and Blue Mountain had belli started in the cup earlier, in the day, but came up again fresh and well to fight out a great finish. I claway faded out at the finish.
