A GREAT PACER INDIANAPOLIS' WINNINGS The success of Indianapolis in the New Zealand Trotting Cup yesterday recalls tho high opinion formed of him by his former trainer, the late W. J. Tomkinson. When he. advised his patron, Mr. G J. Barton, of Dunedin, to buy him, Tomkinson described him as "the greatest pacer ever foaled." •As a four-year-old last season Indianapolis won the Auckland Trotting Cup, and ho now joins Great Hope and Wrackler as boing the youngest horses to win the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Red Shadow won last year when six years old, and Ahuriri won at six and seven years. Indianapolis has now won 16 races and £5517. in stakes. His record is ae follows: — At 2l years, one win, £590; at 3 years, five wins, £1282; at 4 years, seven wins, £1720; at 5 years, throe wins, £1955. Harold Logan, now 12 years old, has scored 26 wins and won £9670 in etakes. MATTIE HERBILWYN RETIREMENT TO STUD The trotting mare Mattio Herbilwyn, who was lame after racing at the Auckland spring meeting, has been taken out of work and is being mated with the trotting sire Surpriso Journey. Mattie Ilerbilwyn. who showed fine form before becoming affected by unsoundness, is well bred, boing by tho speedy trotter Herbilwyn, by Nelson Bimren —Miss Spear, from a Nelson I3iugen mare, who is closely related to the dam of Dilworth, and she should prove a useful matron.' Her owner, R. A. Saunders, has a very promising young trotter by Surprise Journey from Manna, dnm of Manna's Son. and tho mare is again visiting the oxAustralian horse.

PROLETARIAN RETURNS PREPARATION FOR DERBY The three-year-old pacer Proletarian, who has boon spelling since racing at Epsom last month, was taken up again yesterday by I. R. Morrison and will be given a preparation for the Great Northern Trotting Derby. Proletarian ehowed distinct promise in his two races as a two-year-old and at Epsom in August ran a f,ne race. At Hamilton he met with a mishar> prior !o the start of tho Introductory Handicap, and in a s-.bscouent race there and again at Epsom ho did not show his true form. He has taken no harm from his short respite and requires only to show a return to his earlier form to have good prospects in tho Derby. Proletarian's stible mate Cimarron, who trained off after racing early in (he season, is at present on tho easy list. Morrison is handling n two-year-old full-brother to Proletarian and the youngster is showins good promise in his early education.
