GIRL ATHLETES

ANNUAL SPORTS MEETING SPECTACULAR DISPLAYS ARAWA WINS CHALLENGE CUP Tho an nun I sports of the Auckland Girls' Athletic Association were held at Blandford Park on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a -large gathering of spectators. A long programme of contests "'as staged, consisting mainly of team events and spectacular displays. Several individual championship events were included.

There were 110 dull moments. Although the Arawa team won the premier honours by a comfortable margin of points from Heard's for the third year in succession, there was keen rivalry in every event. There were 18 teams competing, each representing sports clubs or city business houses, and excitement ran high among their numerous supporters.

The teams made a striking picture in their neat and colourful costumes as they marched and danced in formation. with a precision and enthusiasm which marked all their efforts. The high standard of physical fitness and discipline was a credit to the careful training of their instructor, Mr. A. N. Rush. .Excellent work on the part of the organisers also was apparent.

Selection of Queen One of the features was the selection of "Miss A.G.A.A." A candidate was chosen from each teani and, after assembling in front of tho grandstand, they inarched in a circle and performed various physical exercises. Points were awarded for physique and deportment, and the task of the judges was not an easy one. Finally, the contest was won by' Miss B. Hodgson, of tho Monks, Limited, team, with Miss J. Anger, Weeks', second, and Miss B. Thomas, Brown, Barrett, third. The combined recreational display was most spectacular and full of rhythm and grace. A humorous touch was lent by the chariot race, and some of the costumes were original and highly amusing. At the completion of the day's programme the teams were assembled in front of the grandstand. Mr. Rush announced the winners of the trophies, and each result was greeted with loud applause, while three cheers were given for "Miss A.G.A.A." 'Mr. T. Garland congratulated the girls on their excellent display. He paid a tribute to the instructor and to the Auckland Girls' Band, which provided the music incidental to the marching and physical displays.
