DAIRYING LEGISLATION

Sir, —When the dairy fanners had the temerity to oppose the pet scheme for quotas so persistently advocated hy the Rt. Hon. -T. G. Coates ever sine© the Ottawa conference, the Government then announced its intention to take over the entire control of the dairying industry; and the presents legislation is the fulfilment of that threat. It makes no provision for the relief of the dire distress under which the dairy farmers are suffering, btrfc takes ample power to enforce the quota and seems in the nature of a punishment of the dairy farmers for not meekly submitting to be dictated to on that question. The very sensible amendment of the Labour PKrty lias been rejected by a complacent majority of Coalition members, but the Labour Party may still rejoice and be exceeding glad, because any Government which refuses aid at present to this tottering industry by subsidy or otherwise, and yet persists in upholding the wheat subsidy—which is the cause of dearer bread to every man, woman and child m New Zealand —is committing political suicide, as certainly as that day follows night, and is handing to the Labour Party untold thousands of votes for the next general election. 231 Parnell Read; J. Thornes.
