HOUSES AT MOUNT ALBERT
Sir, —With reference to a Jetter oa the abcn-e subject by your correspondent "Ratepayer'' in the Herald of October 29, I will give my experience of looking for a home in this district. After advertising several times for a modern five-roomed bungalow periodically for the past few weeks, I am still waiting. Your correspondent, disapproving of the council's idea of building, asserts that there is "plenty of available capital for private speculators." I have even tried on these lines, but it appears property owners have enough to do with what they already own. A permanent tenant, "to lease, with rent in advance," seems of no attraction, so that I can only conclude there must be a great shortage of this type of house, and land agents assure us that this is so. How is this to be remedied if those vrith. this so-called capital do not find house building remunerative, and the council is not to be encouraged to take their place? I claim i* would be an investment, not a speculation. Hopeful.
