WATERFRONT DRIVE
CLIFF WORK COMPLETED
POHUTUKAWAS PRESERVED
The work of trimming the cliffs fringing the waterfront road between Mission and the Bastion bluff has been completed, the projecting ledges and loose material having been removed. More than 20 men were engaged in the work for several months. The reduction of the angle of the cliff face is expected to eliminate what was becoming a danger to motorists. The old pohutukawas overhanging the cliff have been retained, and although, in some cases, they appear to be in a precarious position, their huge roots serve as efficient anchor. Nearer the city, in the neighbourhood of Orakei Point, there have been several large slips recently and these are fenced off pending removal. At Campbell's Point, the facing of the railway embankment with stone bands is making good progress, about 30 having been completed, leaving about half that number to be done. The pockets that have been left in the bands are serving as seed beds for a great variety of weeds which appear to be flourishing, but it is proposed to establish creepers and ice plants to cover the cliff.
