BUSY RAILWAY TRAFFIC
TRAINS WELL PATRONISED RETURNING CONFIDENCE Railway authorities wore particularly pleased with the heavy passenger traffic with which they had to deal yesterday. The splendid holiday weather and the many attractions being oifered both in the city and in country centres contributed largely to this, but officials of the department feel also that it definitely indicates a return of public confidence, and a more general willingness and ability to respond to the call of holiday travel. The limited express for Wellington last night had to have five extra carriages added, a sleeper, a first class and three second class carriages. The special and the ordinary train from Rotorua, leaving for Auckland at 4 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.. were both heavy trains of 13 vehicles filled to capacity with passengers. The Cambridge races were well patronised. The special excursion train returning to Auckland had to be delayed on account of the lateness of the last race of the meeting, and did not arrive until 10.40 p.m., instead of 10 o'clock. The band contest and gymkhana at Whangarei attracted a great many visitors to that centre, and the special train that returned to Auckland last evening was filled to capacity. So much interest did the day's events in Whangarei arouse that there is talk of making the fixture an annual one. The Railway Department carried out its heavy holiday time-table without mishap. _________
