SECOND EDITION AIR RACE LEADER
SCOTT UP AGAIN LEAVES PORT DARWIN TROUBLE WITH ENGINE DUTCHMEN DRAW NEAR AMERICANS IN PURSUIT By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received October 23, 2.15 a.m.) DARWIN, Oct. 22 Mr. Scott was held up after his arrival at Darwin owing to trouble with the port engine of his machine which seized over the Timor Sea. The airman and his co-pilot completed the trip to Darwin with the other engine. Latest indications are that the port engine now is running satisfactorily. Mr. Scott intends to proceed as soon as he has refuelled and had a meal.
The report that Mr. Scott had arrived at Darwin with a defect in one engine has been confirmed from Australia, according to a wireless message received in Auckland early this morning. When the airman arrived the engine had seized. He communicated with Captain de Havilland in London, who said that pistons, spare parts and engineers were at Darwin. In reply Mr. Scott said he refused to admit defeat and if he could not carry out repairs he would take off with one engine. He proceeded to Charleville at 11.4 p.m. Darwin time. On arrival at Darwin, Mr. Scott said his machine had behaved splendidly, although they had had to put up with something from the elements. His average speed for the trip from Mildenhall to Darwin was 173 miles an hour, and the Singapore-Darwin section was covered at 178 miles an hour. Sir. Parmentier is reported to fad about seven hours behind Mr. Scott. He hoped to reach Darwin at dawn. Colonel Roscoe Turner is about six hours behind Mr. Parmentier.
