ROUND-THE-MOUNTAtN RACE NEW PLYMOUTH RIDER WINS AUCKLANDER'S FASTEST TIME [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION] NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday In an exciting finish the annual j round-the-mountain road cycle race of 120 miles resulted in a win for the New Plymouth rider L. Wood, with a handicap of 15m. His time was oh 15m 15s. 1,. Pit tarns, of Midhirst. was second, and L. Reeve, of Inglewood. was third. Fastest time was gained by W. Pratuey, of Auckland, a scratch man. with 5h om 31s. The New Zealand 120 miles junior road championship was won by L. Stevens, ci New Plymouth, in 5h 35m 31 2-Ss. The weather was rather boisterous at the start at 9 a.m., end a strong westerly wind called upon the riders for a great effort over the first section of the route. The distance of the race was increased this year by about 20 miles and the route was made to traverse Manaia and Hawera in a detour from Kaponga and back to Elthaia. It carried with it for the first junior rider home the New Zealand 120 miles road championship, and for this there were 15 entrants. The whole course was over bitumen roads, with an excellent surface. Fortyfour riders started, and the result* were:— L. Wood, New Plymouth (15m), oh 15m 15s, 1: L. Pittams. New Plymouth, (15m), oh 35m 31 2-ss, 6; A. Ellis, New Plymouth (scr). oh 5m 85s, 7; M. Jones Christchurch (10m), 8; B. Old. Waitara (35m), 9: W. J. Seelan, Christchurch (ISm), 10; W. Ireland. New Plymouth (55m), 11: D. Watson. Te Kuiti (10m), 12. TAKAPUNA AMATEUR CLUB The Takapuna Amateur Cycling Club held its last road race of the season in boisterous weather on Saturday afternoon. This was an ISi-mile event for the Onslow Wood Memorial Shield, and resulted in a thrilling finish. The race resulted:—A. Gunn (2m 455), 55m ISs. 1: G. l Tcwart (3m 30s), 56m 3 l-ss, 2; O. McKee (2sn 15s), 51m 33 2-ss. 3; A. Grant (2m 455). 55m IS 2-ss, 4 Gunn won by a bare half-length, -with the rest of the field wheels away. Fastest time was made by A. Parker (lm). who rode the distance in 53m 593. S. Lawrence (scr) gained second fastest time. 54m 9iAUCKLAND CLUB'S RACES The Auckland Cycle Club held two road races on Saturday afternoon .over the Tamaki circuit in boisterous conditions, with occasional rain showers. The juniors rode over 5§ miles and the seniors over 21 miles. Following were the results:— Junior Race.—T. Hedlnnd. lm 40a. 1: R. Hedlund, 2m 50s. 2: B. Harvey, scr. 3: E. Redfera. 40s. 4. Harvey returned fastest time of lGm ISs. Senior Race.—K. McKenrie, fm, 1: C. Rae. 5m 15s. 2; K. Mathieeon. lm 20s. 3: D. Aitcheson. lm. 4. S. Litchfield, scr, gained fastest time in i>Sm 425. THAMES CLUB'S EVENT [prom ovn OWN correspondent] THAMES, Sunday The Thames Cycle Club held an IS-miles race yesterday, the result being:—A. Thorn (6m 30s), 1; D. Andrew (4m), 2; K. Green (4m 455). 3. Fastest time was that of D. Andrew. 51m 3s. There was a strong northwest wind and nine riders competed, including W. Hansen, of Auckland, and D. S. Aberhart. of Whakatane. Thorn rode well to win comfortably from Andrew, who overtook Green in the fourth lap. The visitors caught the three local back-markers. West. W. Burr and Edkins. in the third lap. and R. C. Burr in the fourth. The club closes its season nest Saturday, when the annual contest to Paeroa and back, a distance of 40 miles, will be staged. The contest is for the Ensor and Andrew Cups.
