MELBOURNE VISITORS

LARGE NUMBER LEAVES departure of monowai gay scene on wharf As has been usual lately with vessels leaving for Sydney and Melbourne, there was a considerably larger number of passengers than is normal at this time of tho year on the Monowai when she sailed from Central Wharf last night, the passenger list including visitors to tho Melbourne Centenary celebrations. The vessel is scheduled to reach Sydney on Sunday, and Melbourne on Wednesday. Tho total number of passengers was just under 300, and although her departure was delayed until nine o'clock through loading operations being suspended owing to rain yesterday morning, there was a largo crowd of relatives and friends on the wharf to.farewell those leaving. The vessel's floodlights shining on the crowd, and the thick network of streamers between the ship and the wharf, revealed a gay and animated scene. The Union Boat Club's rowing eight from Wanganui, which will officially represent New Zealand in the Centenary rowing events, were among those who left by the Monowai, and there were a number of supporters on the wharf to wish them good luck. Also on the vessel were the four-year-old racehorses Limbohm, a Melbourne Cup candidate, and Impasto. The owner of Limbohm, Mr. A. J. Toxward, of Hawke's Bay, decided at the last moment, after the horse's success in tho King Edward Memorial Handicap at Ellerslie on Tuesday, to send him to Molbourne to compete in the cupj to be run on Tuesday, November 6. Limbohm's trainer, Mr. W. C. Griffith, and the leading New Zealand jockey, K. Voitre, who has been engaged to ride the horse in the race, also left by the Monowai. The next passenger, vessels frois Auckland to Australia will be tlw Mara ma, which will leave for Sydney on October 26, the Niagara, for Sydney on October 30, and the Monowai, for Sydney and Melbourne on the game date. , *
