ELLERSLIE TRAINING
MERRY LAP'S HALF-MILE KING MUSK WORKS USEFULLY CONDITION OF GAY BRONEY BY ARCHER Rain fell while training operations were in progress at Ellerslie yesterday and there was not a great deal of fast work owing to many horses being on tho easy list after their exertions at the recent meeting. The No. 3 grass was available for galloping and the bust effort recorded was Merry Lap's half-mile in 52 4-ss. On the srass Kilmuir (Bmgess) beat Radnor i Wiggins) over three furloivis iu 43 d-ss. Radnor is vary green and is just commencing to speed up in his wurk. 11« is a Sve-year-old gelding by Kilbroney from Llanberis and is a good type, with plenty of she. Merry Lap (Lucasaie) placed four fur longs behind ir. 52 4-ss, accomplishing his tusk in good style. He has made excellent progress «inc9 joining G. Holland's stable and his condition is improving each week, although it will be a little tinio yet before he is thoroughly fit. Firebrick (Simpson) s'.rode over three furlongs at three-quarter pace. Firebrick is a four-year-old colding by liomeo from Fireclay and lie is a robust customer who will probably require a good deal of work to make him fit Unlikely Cambridge Starters ■Neil (Mcllroy, l worked over about a mile and a-h-.ilf, going evenly throughout und running tho last six furlongs in 1.30. Neil disappointed in the Onehnnga Steeplechase on Tuesday and it is unlikely that he v ill keep his engagement in tiie Waikato Hunt Cup on Monday. Royal Appellant (Buchanan) and Master Rex (Bigham) covered five furlongs, comfortably in 1.9 2-5. These horses are engaged at Cambridge, but they are doubtful starters. lvoyal Appellant did not go par* • icularly well in his races at J*>llerslie, but Master Rex shaped creditably for a novice in his only start. King Musk (Tremain) ran an easy six furlongs in 1.29. never being at top at any stage. He is lookin# and working well and will probably have his next outing at Avondale, where, his engagements include tho Champion Hack Plate. Barn Dance (Bigham) strode over halt a mile in 5Ss, and Hawthorn (Buchanan) worked usefully without being extended. Hawthorn is carrying a bright and healthy appearance, but he has been very disappointing and failed to run into a plac»* ir. i*ny of his races last season. Gay Broney (Connor) worked over a round, travelling at an even speed throughout and running the last six furlongs in 1.80 1-5. Gay Broney ha« been affected with soreness lately and the trouble has been located in one of his forefeet. In the meantime he is not being set any. tasks of an exacting nature' and he is a trine burlj at present.
