OPENING OF NEW SEASON FIRST GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP PONSONBY TO PLAY OLD BOYS The Auckland Cricket Association's 1934-35 season will open to-morrow, when tho first day's play in the first grade and senior B grade competitions will he decided. In the first grade championship the first series of matches has brought together several strong teams, and some very interesting and attractive cricket is anticipated. The principal match will be the meeting of Ponsonby and King's Old Boys on No. 2 wicket at Eden Park. King's Old Boys, with a team very similar to that of last season, will be facing a greatlystrengthened Ponsonby side. The latter team will not have tho services of tho professional coach, L. F. lownsend, tomorrow, as the Derbyshire player will not arrive in Auckland until next Wednesday, but it is likely a place will bo left for him for the following week. Grafton has drawn last year's champions, Pornoll, on No. 3 wicket at Eden Park. Both teams are again very strong, and an even contest is expected. North Shore will ftico University on its homo ground at Devonport. This match, too, should have a very interesting conclusion. The remaining teams, Eden and Y.M.C.A., will travel to King's College for their fixture. It will be interesting to see how tho rejuvenated Y.M.C.A. bowling fares against the strong batting talent of the Eden side.
